The crown is the cement or mortar cap on top of a brick chimney. It sheds rain away from the brick and the flue.
What happens if a chimney crown is cracked?
Water can get into the cracks, freeze in winter and widen them. Over time that can damage the brick and mortar below. A cracked crown is worth having looked at before it gets worse.
